Privacy Policy

The Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) is committed to protecting the privacy of its members while continuing to provide superior benefits and services. To serve that goal, the Association has adopted the following privacy policy. This policy covers how MASB handles personal information collected and received from or through our website or online membership portal.

Information Collected

The Association collects and utilizes different kinds of information from users of the Association website or online membership portal.

The information we collect will depend upon what you do when visiting our sites. Except as stated in this policy, we will not collect personally identifiable information about you when you visit our sites unless you choose to provide such information to us. Personal information provides us with aggregate demographic data that MASB uses to improve the services offered to members. Providing demographic information to MASB is optional. This information is kept confidential by the Association and is used for internal purposes. We will use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure that demographics do not identify any specific user.

We may ask for your address, phone number and/or email address when you place an order for an Association product or service, when you complete a survey, register for a conference or on other occasions. In each case, our objective is to have your contact information so that we can serve you better.

If you're paying for registrations and products with a credit card, we also will collect your credit card number (employing industry standard security and encryption technologies), billing information and e-mail address to process your payment.

From time to time, we may use your address, phone number or email address to provide you with updates and other information that we think may be of interest to you.

We collect the email addresses of those who communicate with us via email. We don't sell any email addresses to any third party.

The MASB website contains links to third-party websites. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such other sites. We encourage you to review and understand the privacy practices of any website before providing to them any personal information.

Disclosures Required by Law

We don't rent, sell or share personal information about you with other people or nonaffiliated companies except to provide products or services you have requested, when we have your permission, or under the following circumstances:

(a) We respond to subpoenas, court orders or legal process, or to establish or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims;

(b) We believe it is necessary to share information in order to investigate, prevent or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, situations involving potential threats to the physical safety of any person, or as otherwise required by law.

Privacy of Children

MASB's policy is to limit the collection of personal information from children in substantial agreement with the Children's Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA). The MASB website isn't designed or intended for use by children under 13. If you are under 18, you should not visit our site unless a parent or guardian is present. Children under 13 may not submit any personally identifiable information to us, and if we discover that we have inadvertently gathered any such information from a child under 13, we will take appropriate steps to delete it. If you believe that your child under the age 18 has submitted personally identifiable information to us, you may contact us in order to view, modify, and/or delete any information your child provided.

User Options – Opt Out

A user may opt to cease receiving future promotional mailings by sending an email to membership@masb.org and including his or her full name, User ID (if applicable), email address, and the mailing he or she no longer wishes to receive in the subject or message area. MASB reserves the right to send all users nonpromotional email related to business practice and systems operations even if the user has opted out of promotional mailings.

Users may change their personal information at any time by using the provided interface once they are logged in and as often as necessary. If users are unable to log in and change their information themselves, they will be able to send an email to membership@masb.org contact us at the telephone number or address above for assistance.

Visiting our website and providing personal information sufficient to be able to email information to you will be sufficient to create an existing business relationship with you for purposes of complying with the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 regarding unsolicited commercial email.

Security

Some areas of the MASB website and the online membership portal are secured and can only be accessed by using a specific user ID and a password. For security reasons, don't share your user ID or password. Users may change their personal information at any time by using the provided interface once they are logged in and as often as necessary. If users are unable to log in and change their information themselves, they will be able to send an email to membership@masb.org or contact us at the telephone number or address above for assistance.

The Association undertakes reasonable efforts to ensure that all personally identifiable information collected on our site remains secure. Internally, access to our database is restricted to those Association employees who need access in order to serve you. The Association staff is trained to treat member and customer information confidentially. The Association cannot provide a guarantee against inadvertent disclosure or intentional misappropriation of data by a third party.

Changes to This Policy

MASB reserves the right to change this privacy policy at any time. Notification of changes will be posted on the MASB website and the revised privacy policy will be effective immediately upon posting. Because these changes may affect your personal information, we suggest that you look for information regarding changes on a regular basis and review the changes as soon as they are published on the website.
