Support When Boards Need It Most

School board service often involves complex legal responsibilities, from open meetings and board policies to student matters, governance questions and emerging issues.

MASB Legal Counsel helps board members and superintendents stay informed, understand key legal considerations and connect with resources that support sound local governance.

How MASB Supports Members

Legal Information and Resources

MASB Legal Counsel makes school law updates and legal topics easier to access, understand and apply to board service. Members can find information on current school law, recent court decisions, Attorney General opinions and statewide legal issues affecting Michigan public schools.

Board members and superintendents don't need to navigate complex legal issues alone. Our Legal Services team is available to answer questions, explain legal developments, and help members understand how school law applies to board governance.

The Legal Team also connects members with related MASB resources, including Legal Literacy, legal publications, the Michigan Council of School Attorneys and the MASB Legal Trust Fund for litigation with potential statewide significance.

  • School law updates and legal developments
  • Board duties and governance guidance
  • Legal publications and learning resources
  • Statewide perspective on public education issues

Important Note: MASB Legal Services provides legal education and information as a general service to MASB members. Any legal information provided by MASB should not be interpreted or used as a substitute for a legal opinion from retained legal counsel. Before making legal decisions that require a legal opinion, school boards and administrators should consult with their retained legal counsel or other qualified counsel.
