With the campaigns for and against Proposal 1 gearing up, MASB has gathered together several resources for your districts to use in communicating about this amendment, including language for a board resolution.

MASB, along with other education organizations, business groups, labor groups and road-building organizations, are part of the bipartisan Safe Roads Yes! coalition that supports a “Yes” vote on May 5, 2015. On this date, Michigan voters will be asked to approve a 1-cent sales tax increase that will help fund schools and much needed repairs to Michigan’s roads.

“With the proposed increase in funding for schools and at-risk programs, as well as funding for the adequacy study to determine the cost of educating a child rolled into this proposal, MASB feels strongly that all school boards should support Proposal 1,” notes MASB Deputy Director Don Wotruba. “We firmly believe that it will take strong turnout from the education community along with our other coalition partners to pass this proposal.”

In addition to the board resolution language, resources on MASB’s website include:

  • Article for use in your newsletters
  • Column/letter to the editor text
  • Fact Sheet and FAQs

If you do pass a resolution, be sure to share it with us and your local press.

In all of your communications, please be cognizant of campaign finance laws. The rules are similar to campaigning for a ballot proposal—a refresher from MASB Legal Counsel Brad Banasik is available here.

As more information becomes available that your districts can use to help inform your communities, updates will be posted to the MASB website and shared through DashBoard and News From the Capitol. If you have questions, please feel free to contact MASB’s Government Relations team.
