Literacy and learning activities that encompass curricular ties and service projects, a cutting-edge cybersecurity class and an early morning exercise program were just a handful of the innovative programs honored at the 21st Annual Education Excellence Awards Ceremony and Luncheon this past Tuesday at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center in East Lansing.

MASB, with the generous support of the SET SEG Foundation, proudly recognized 20 unique and innovative public school programs with a 2015 Education Excellence Award. These districts, schools, administrators, teachers, students and programs have helped to raise student achievement, encourage critical thinking, and demonstrate innovation and uniqueness. They also have found solutions to complex educational challenges, and haven’t let financial barriers and limited resources stand in the way of attaining excellence.

“There are so many great things going on in public schools and we just don’t celebrate them enough,” said Kathy Hayes, MASB Executive Director. “The Education Excellence Awards allow us to honor these districts and their accomplishments. We are so proud of the winners and what they’re doing for public education in Michigan.”

Representatives from Swan Valley School District received the Innovator of the Year Award for the Education Excellence program with the highest total score. Their program, Reading Beyond the Page, was one of 20 Education Excellence Award recipients this year.

In addition to an unrestricted monetary award from the SET SEG Foundation, winning programs received a trophy and metal street sign to display in their community proclaiming their district an “Education Excellence Winner.”

Entries are judged by an independent panel of state education specialists. From this year’s award winners, the program with the highest overall score, Reading Beyond the Page at Swan Valley High in Swan Valley School District, received special recognition with the Innovator of the Year Award. They received 290 out of a possible 300 points.
