Last Wednesday, after receiving and reviewing nearly 13,000 public comments, the Michigan State Board of Education approved voluntary guidance for schools in creating environments for LGBT students to feel safe and be successful. The guidelines were created in response to requests from educators around the state.

According to MDE’s press release, the new guidelines provide schools with many common sense policies and practices that respect the rights, safety and privacy concerns of all students, including gay and transgender students. They also strengthen parental involvement in decisionmaking about their children, while providing for schools to protect the health and safety of at-risk children.
