MASB Lauds Court of Appeals Ruling on Guns in Schools

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Association of School Boards Executive Director Don Wotruba issued the following statement on the Michigan Court of Appeals decision to allow local school districts to ban open carry:

“This is a victory for our school districts, and a victory for local communities setting the policies by which they live. By ruling that school districts are not local units of government, the COA has said that each individual district now has the power to ban firearms in school. MASB has long since advocated for our members to be able to make decisions that are best for their districts and for their communities. This decision puts the power of the choice into the hands of local districts.

“We applaud the COA for this ruling, and believe those governing local schools should be the ones setting the policies related to the education and safety of our children.”
