Smith Takes Over Government Relations, Wotruba to Transition to Executive Director This Summer

The Michigan Association of School Boards is transitioning staff into new leadership roles as Executive Director Kathy Hayes prepares for retirement.

Jennifer Smith is MASB’s new Director of Government Relations. She previously served as the Assistant Director of the department. She takes over for Don Wotruba, who is currently serving as Deputy Director, and will take over as Executive Director upon Hayes’ retirement this summer.

“Don and Jen exemplify the leadership skills and qualities necessary for these positions,” said Don Hubler, President of MASB’s Board of Directors. “We’re very confident both will help propel MASB into the future as we continue to advocate for public education and students across Michigan.”

Wotruba has been with the organization nearly 18 years and has been a school board member himself, serving on the Eaton RESA board for six years. He also holds his CAE designation from the American Society of Association Executives. Prior to his time at MASB, Wotruba served on legislative staff in the House for three years.

Smith has been with MASB for three years. Prior to that, she worked in both the state House and Senate. Both Smith and Wotruba are graduates of Western Michigan University.
