This Thursday, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on School Aid is holding a joint hearing with the House Education Committee on educational savings accounts (9 a.m., House Office Building, Room 519). This proposal would set aside a certain amount of funding for each student in an account that the parent/guardian could then use where they feel it is appropriate for their child.

In other words, the committee is bringing up the idea of vouchers once again.

We bring this to your attention because of the seriousness of the issue on its own, but also as you look at the bigger picture of issues currently facing our state. As the Governor and Legislature look for ways to help Detroit Public Schools, this has come up. As academic performance and financial stress are discussed, this has come up.

We need to be mindful of this discussion and ready to engage, as this is an issue that is not likely to go away. MASB will represent you in committee on Thursday, but we also urge you to contact your legislator and urge them to oppose any voucher or voucher-like proposal.
