You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

So many issues are flying at you when you’re on a school board. From buses to food vendors to personnel, it can be overwhelming. But it doesn’t always have to be.

Since I was appointed to a school board a year ago, I have taken several of MASB’s board certification courses. Like many of you, I started with CBA 101, Introduction to School Board Service. It helped give me a foundation of knowledge that aided me at the board table and helped me to make more informed decisions.

This year, MASB is working to bring more Board Member Certification classes to your area. At the end of February and beginning of March, there are several taking place at locations around the state. These classes contain basic knowledge that all board members should have. Additionally, Board President Workshops are being offered covering issues and practical guidance specific to the role of president.

Did you know simply emailing your fellow board members about school business could lead to a violation of the Open Meetings Act? How about sending a group text? It’s just a small piece of the critical knowledge you’ll obtain by taking part in these training sessions.

Governing a 21st century school district comes with new challenges, and also new opportunities. We need to ensure we have the knowledge necessary to not just do the job, but to do the job well. We simply owe it to the kids and to the people who elected us.

I plan to continue on with MASB’s board certification program and I would encourage you to do the same. Our constituents demand it of us. A recent poll shows 74 percent of voters expect board members to be trained.

We’re making key decisions about the future of our communities every day. It’s up to us to make sure we’re arming ourselves with the right tools to do the job. Don’t miss this opportunity to educate yourself and improve your effectiveness as a board member.
