As school board members, both veteran and new, you are preparing to deal with some of the more complex and nuanced issues you’ll be facing at the board table in 2018. One way to get a "leg up" is through MASB's Board Member Certification (CBA) classes. A few learning opportunities remain before the end of the calendar year in both the Lower and Upper Peninsulas.

CBA 101: Fundamentals of School Board Service @ Van Buren ISD (Dec. 2)—Looking for the perfect refresher and/or foundation for effective school board service? Want to learn, problem solve and share ideas with fellow board members in your region and around the state? This is for you!

CBA 278: Dealing With Difficult People @ U.P. Distance Learning Sites (Dec. 4)—Dealing with difficult people is a time and energy drain we’d all like to avoid. However, as a school board member, you often must deal with difficult people as part of your day-to-day responsibilities. Learn some effective strategies and practical ideas on how to communicate with and handle even the most difficult person. This course will be broadcasted from MASB Headquarters to distance learning sites at Burt Township Schools, Copper Country ISD, Delta Schoolcraft ISD, Dickinson Iron ISD, Eastern UP ISD, Gogebic Ontonagon ISD, LaSalle High School, Marquette-Alger RESA, Menominee ISD and Munising Public Schools

December CBAs @ Oakland Schools (Dec. 9)—Our final CBA offering of 2017. If you're looking to end the year on a good note, and start your resolutions early, you're going to want to attend! Classes you can dive into will include:

  • Data First: High School and Beyond (CBA 344)
  • Public Speaking Skills (CBA 260)
  • Collaborative Conversations (CBA 365)
  • School Finance and Budget (CBA 103)
  • ...and more!

"Good board members are students too," notes past attendee Dan Centers from Livonia Public Schools. "MASB courses have excellent content, and the staff is well organized and professional. MASB courses are pivotal in being an effective board member."

Seats are still available in most classes; however, board members are encouraged to register as soon as possible*. We hope to see many of you there! If you have any questions, please contact the Leadership Development and Executive Search Services Department at or 517.327.5900.

Lastly, mark your calendars for the MASB Winter Institute, which will be held Feb. 23 – 25 in Mt. Pleasant. More information to come soon!
