The Whole Child: Systems, Policies and the Vision to Help Every Child Find Success
Presenter: Melissa Usiak, Ph.D., Executive Director, Michigan Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development

More than reading, writing and ‘rithmatic, more than M-STEP proficiency, more than learning targets. . .schools and district leaders today are being called to be mindful of the “whole child” as they help students grow and learn.
Why the shift? Leaders at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development explain, “A child who enters school healthy and feels safe is ready to learn. A student who feels connected to school is more likely to stay in school. All students who have access to challenging and engaging academic programs are better prepared for further education, work and civic life. These components must work together, not in isolation. That is the goal of whole child education.” 1

Join Michigan ASCD’s Executive Director Melissa Usiak, Ph.D. and MASB staff for a deep dive into understanding the “whole child” approach and the Board of Education’s role in it. You’ll leave with tools and actionable items to help your district help every child—every whole child— reach a successful future.
