Healthy Students/Healthy Schools
MASB is pleased to be participating in the Leadership Forum for Healthy Students and Healthy Schools in conjunction with the National School Boards Association, Michigan Association of School Administrators, American Association of School Administrators and the Center for Disease Control. We are currently working on the second year of a three year project with the ultimate goals of: increasing the capacity of the team to address asthma issues; increase awareness of and disseminate asthma information to superintendents, school board members and other relevant audiences; work to reduce exposure to environmental factors that cause and/or exacerbate asthma in schools; and promote development and implementation of asthma-friendly policies in schools. Prevalence of Asthma in Michigan: - 233,894 children under the age of 18 (9.1 percent) currently have asthma
- 683,693 adults ages 18 years and older (9 percent) currently have asthma
- Asthma prevalence for adults in Michigan is slightly higher than that of the U.S.
- Asthma is more prevalent in adult females (11.3 percent) than adult males (6.5 percent)
- Asthma prevalence for adults decreases with increasing income. Prevalence for those earning less than $20,000 is significantly higher than those earning $75,000 or more.
Cost of Asthma: - The total cost of asthma in Michigan is over $394,000,000 per year
- The average cost of hospitalization due to asthma is $10,025
- The costs generally rise with age: %5,158 for children less than 1 year of age to $13,558 for adults 65 years and older
