Retainer Options

MASB understands the tight budgets school districts operate within. We developed our “flat rate” retainer options to make it easier for districts to budget their labor relations services by allowing them to establish a fixed amount in advance. MASB’s flat rate means there are no hourly fees, no hidden costs, and no add ons — despite the length of a district’s bargaining process. Our flat rate fee structure is designed to protect school districts against potential runaway costs that frequently occur with agencies that charge by the hour. We offer two service options to MASB member school districts which provide essential cost containment and cost predictability. Our goal is to provide the highest quality labor relations services at reasonable costs to school districts.

Option 1 - Three Year Comprehensive*
Option One is a comprehensive labor relations service. It is the most frequently selected option because it provides three years of consistent, reliable service at a reasonable cost. The services include:

  • Contract Analysis
  • Preparation
  • Research
  • Negotiations of all collective bargaining agreements
  • Fact-finding representation
  • Representation before the Michigan Employment Relations Commission(MERC)
  • Arbitration Hearings
  • Grievance Assistance
  • Contract Administration
  • Inservice Training

Option One’s cost is based on the size of your district and the number of contracts to be negotiated.

Option 2 - One Year Bargaining*
This is a one-year service agreement covering the negotiations of a selected collective bargaining agreement. Services included under Option Two are:

  • Preparation
  • Research
  • Bargaining
  • Representation in fact-finding proceedings

Option 3 - Hourly Service*
A plan to provide service when you need it. A minimal annual retainer fee and hourly charges based on your usage.

  • Negotiations
  • Arbitration
  • Grievance Representation
  • Research
  • Other

*Fees for Option Plans above do not include charges for mileage and necessary out-of-pocket expenses incurred in servicing the district (e.g. lodging and meals).
