In order to increase interest in serving on a board of education, MASB launched the Get on Board campaign this past Monday with a press conference and media roundtable featuring MASB Executive Director Don Wotruba, MASB President Cindy Gansen, MASB President-Elect Brenda Carter, MASA Executive Director Chris Wigent and State Superintendent Brian Whiston. This grassroots campaign will focus on encouraging people to give back to the community and to help advocate for and improve student achievement.

“We all know someone who possesses the necessary traits to be an effective board member and we need your help to get them on board,” encouraged Wotruba. “We need civic-minded, student-focused individuals like you to serve on school boards. This work is too important to have seats go unfilled.”

In the last school board election in 2014, nearly 10% of the available seats weren’t filed for at the filing deadline. MASB commissioned a poll through EPIC-MRA in March 2015 to find out why there wasn’t more interest in board service.

The poll found that 27% thought boards were too political, 22% were apathetic, 15% said the time commitment was too great, 14% believe school boards are ineffective, 13% weren’t aware of any openings on their local board and the remaining 9% were undecided.

“Those were eye-opening numbers for us,” Wotruba said. “This campaign will help to stress the importance of service and why folks should get involved rather than sitting on the sidelines.”

As noted above, MASB needs your help for this campaign to be successful. Resources have been posted on the MASB website and the list will continue to grow up until the filing deadline of July 26. There are materials on how to recruit, what makes an effective board member and even videos to help spark interest. Our Candidate’s Guide to School Board Elections also is available for purchase in our Online Store.

We look forward to working with you over the coming months as we find more qualified candidates to Get On Board! If you have any questions, please contact MASB Director of Communications, PR & Marketing John Tramontana at jtramontana@masb.org or 517.327.5908.
