Questions about the new categorical funding included in the FY2015-2016 School Aid Budget that provides reimbursement to districts on a per-pupil basis for subscription costs of data analysis tools. Although the details are yet to be determined by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget, it appears the Legislature is acknowledging the benefit of using these types of systems by making them more accessible through funding all or part of the district's cost.

Lately, teacher union groups have begun attempting to negotiate language into collective bargaining agreements that essentially expands a district’s obligation to keep the union apprised of its own members. This language generally maintains that, at least once a year, the district will take on the responsibility of providing the union with the full name, contact information, employment status and salary of each professional staff member “represented by the union,” as well as update the union throughout the year when a status or salary change occurs. The MASB Legal staff encourages all member districts to think twice before entering into such a commitment.

The 20 recipients of the 2015 MASB/SET SEG Foundation Education Excellence Awards are some of the greatest examples of unique and innovative public school programs in the state of Michigan. Over the next few months, MASB will share the details of each program, presented in alphabetical order by district. This week we highlight the TV & Broadcast Media Program at Frederick V. Pankow Center at L'Anse Creuse Public Schools.

There are a series of bills in the Michigan Legislature that would eliminate the Michigan's Electric Customer Choice Program and—if signed into law—would hurt Michigan schools. To raise awareness, the Michigan Schools Energy Cooperative has created the social media sites listed below as part of an information campaign to help school districts understand the implications of the elimination of the state’s electric choice program.

This week we highlight the Jump Start program at Lawton Elementary in Lawton Community Schools.

Over the course of this year, the Legislature passed a few new laws that will affect the new school year. Some have already gone into effect, some will soon. The following is a brief description of the most recent new laws to know about for the upcoming year. These are in addition to issues we’ve covered previously that were included in the School Aid Budget.

School board members in Michigan are preparing to deal with some of the more complex and nuanced issues they’ll be facing at the board table by participating in advanced board certification (CBA) classes. MASB is experiencing a record number of registrations for classes dealing with issues such as district safety, superintendent performance goals, board ethics and maintaining a focus on student achievement.
