Spring is the most celebratory time of the school year—graduation, spring sport tournaments and recognition ceremonies to name a few, along with the end of the school year for those on traditional schedules.

I recently attended one of these types of events in Portage for Kalamazoo RESA. Part of the event was recognizing school board members and whole boards who had attained a certification from MASB in 2016. The awards were distributed by MASB Directors Kathleen Moore and Michael Rochholz. Attendees also listened to a presentation by Western Michigan University President John M. Dunn, who reflected on his time serving on a school board in Oregon.

“If you really want to understand a community and the fabric of democracy, be on a school board,” was just one of the great takeaways from his talk.

MASB staff and members of the Board of Directors enjoy the opportunity to attend these annual events. It’s important with everything school board members do to take time out to celebrate accomplishments, not only of your district, but your own as well.

In addition to those recognized in the Kalamazoo area, almost 200 other board members and 23 boards representing 39 counties across the state earned awards in MASB’s Certified Boardmember Awards program in 2016.

“With the public’s expectation for accountability and transparency, it’s more important than ever that our school leaders are informed and prepared to deal with the complex education issues they face,” said MASB Executive Director Don Wotruba. “Training equips them with the tools necessary to make the best decisions for the kids of our state.”
