Adjunct Staff

MASB uses a diverse pool of adjunct consultants to assist in the delivery of our programs and services. Our adjuncts have years of experience in education and many are former school board members, superintendents or administrators. Their experience in the field allows them to bring a unique perspective to the work that they do with school boards across the state.

Mary Colton -

After 35 years as a teacher, counselor, and administrator retired as the Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services and Chief Negotiator for Zeeland Public Schools. Presently employed as a Senior Associate for Aspex Solutions Inc. the creator of AppliTrack, a human resources product developed specifically for schools. Extensive experience in strategic planning, leadership coaching and mentoring and evaluation development.

Bob Galardi

Robert Galardi -

Served 32 years in the Ann Arbor Public Schools as teacher, principal, administrator and labor relations/contract negotiator. Formerly union president for teachers and principals, executive director of curriculum and deputy superintendent for administrative services. Experience in recruiting, hiring and coaching teachers, principals and school leaders to help them achieve their professional goals. Facilitates negotiations, provides direct support to boards with communications and conflict resolution services and teaches CBA classes.

Steve Gaynor

Steve Gaynor -

Previously the superintendent at Bloomfield Hills Schools and Royal Oak Schools, as well as serving the board’s team in Walled Lake and Holly as an assistant superintendent and principal. Experienced in interest-based bargaining, expedited and traditional bargaining and labor management committees to avoid and/or resolve grievances.


Jim Gillette -

Retired educator with 35 years of experience in public schools as a teacher and administrator, including 24 years as a superintendent of schools. Extensive background in contract administration, grievance arbitration, mediation, fact finding, traditional as well as expedited bargaining, and has a thorough understanding of all facets of school management. Also has a special interest in board/superintendent relations and HR administration. As a superintendent, served on the MASA board and various positions at the regional level.

  Rod Green -

John Males -

Former superintendent with 15 years of experience, John has extensive bargaining experience with a strong background in the application of PERA as well as grievances, exhibit preparation for arbitration, contract administration and collective bargaining. He's certified in facilitative mediation and conflict resolution.


Thomas C. Smith, Ph.D. -

Retired superintendent from Escanaba. Negotiated numerous contracts in Escanaba and other districts. Experience with mediation and arbitration and has represented the district in several grievance hearings. 


Penny Swanson -

Penny Swanson has served as an instructor, consultant and assistant superintendent, and has served as superintendent in Centreville, Kent City and Chesaning. She was a senior vice president of Edison Schools in New York, where she supervised schools serving over 25,000 students, and lead the opening of 15 schools across the country. She has been selected as a distinguished alumni of Grand Valley State University. She has conducted several superintendent searches and has been a specialist in the area of negotiations.
