Adjunct Staff

MASB uses a diverse pool of adjunct consultants to assist in the delivery of our programs and services. Our adjuncts have years of experience in education and many are former school board members, superintendents or administrators. Their experience in the field allows them to bring a unique perspective to the work that they do with school boards across the state.

Mary Colton - Region 6

After 35 years as a teacher, counselor, and administer, retired as the Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services and Chief Negotiator for Zeeland Public Schools.  Presently employed as a Senior Associate for Aspex Solutions Inc. the creator of AppliTrack, a human resourses product developed specifically for schools.  Extentive experience in strategic planning, leadership coaching and mentoring and evaluation development.

Sheri Davie - Region 1

Co-owner of Davie Multimedia, producing state and local educational programs for more than 25 years. Served as the U.P. regional manager for Senator Debbie Stabenow from 2000-2010. Previously, was a member of the educational support personnel staff at Lake Superior State University, serving as ESP union vice president and steward to ESP staff. 

Thomas Davis - Regions 2, 3 and 7

Served Holt Public Schools for 36 years, two years as a high school mathematics teacher, and 34 years in administration with extensive experience in curriculum, labor relations and negotiations. Final 11 years at Holt were as Superintendent. Post retirement, served in two interim superintendent roles for 6 months each at DeWitt Schools and Dansville Schools. As Interim Superintendent, assisted the DeWitt Board and the Dansville Board in hiring their respective superintendents and negotiated teacher contracts.

Jim Gillette - Region 3

Retired educator with 35 years experience in public schools as a teacher and administrator, including 24 years as a superintendent of schools.  Extensive background in contract administration, grievance arbitration, mediation, fact finding, traditional as well as expedited bargaining, and has a thorough understanding of all facets of school management. Also has a special interest in board/superintendent relations and HR administration. As a superintendent, served on the MASA board and various positions at the regional level.

Alan Kantola - Region 1

More than 40 years experience in public education, including serving as superintendent of Engadine Consolidated Schools and Brimley Area Schools. Areas of experience include budget development and implementation, collective bargaining and contract administration, school law, public relations, Superintendent/Board relations, curriculum development, and staff professional development and evaluation.

Norm McKindles - Region 1

Retired from public education in 2010 after more than 33 years of service, including six years as 7-12 principal and 12 years as Superintendent for North Central and Baraga Area Schools.  Experience in all aspects of business administration, collective bargaining of numerous master agreements, state and federal grant applications and reporting, staff development and evaluation, curriculum development, food service management and the oversight of custodial/maintenance services.  Significant experience with the Federal Impact Aid Program, serving as Michigan’s State Chair representing all eligible districts.

Chuck Miller - Region 7

Chuck earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Indiana University and a master’s degree in education administration from Saginaw Valley State University. Chuck was an employee of SET SEG School Insurance Specialists for 30 years and retired as the director of customer relations and as executive director of the SET SEG Educational Foundation. Prior to working for SET SEG, Chuck worked in school business administration for 11 years for Niles Community Schools, Bay City Public Schools and Ingham Intermediate Schools.

 

Tom Pillar - Regions 3, 4 and 7

Retired after 41 years as high school teacher and department head, elementary principal, high school principal, associate superintendent and for the last eighteen years superintendent. Major interest is the board’s role in school governance, and has published articles on the relationship between the board and superintendent.  Experience managing school construction. Selected by MASA as the Region Six Superintendent of the Year for 2010. Holds Bachelor, Master and Doctorate Degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Penny Swanson - Region 3

After 35 years as a teacher, counselor, and administer, retired as the Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services and Chief Negotiator for Zeeland Public Schools. Served 32 years in the Ann Arbor Public Schools as teacher, principal, administrator and labor relations/contract negotiator. Formerly union president for teachers and principals, executive director of curriculum and deputy superintendent for administrative services. Experience in recruiting, hiring and coaching teachers, principals and school leaders to help them achieve their professional goals. Facilitates negotiations, provides direct support to boards with communications and conflict resolution services and teaches CBA classes.

Previously the superintendent at Bloomfield Hills Schools and Royal Oak Schools, as well as serving the board’s team in Walled Lake and Holly as an assistant superintendent and principal. Experienced in interest-based bargaining, expedited and traditional bargaining and labor management committees to avoid and/or resolve grievances.

Former superintendent with 15 years of experience, John has extensive bargaining experience with a strong background in the application of PERA as well as grievances, exhibit preparation for arbitration, contract administration and collective bargaining. He's certified in facilitative mediation and conflict resolution.

Thomas C. Smith, Ph.D. - tcsmith@chartermi.net

Retired superintendent from Escanaba. Negotiated approximately 30 contracts in Escanaba and other districts. Experience with mediation and arbitration and has represented the district in several grievance hearings. Along with work at MASB, currently teaches for the University of Phoenix and facilitates teacher evaluation seminars.
