In an effort to promote the fact that our public schools are quality places to educate Michigan schoolchildren, and to foster positive relationship-building with local media, MASB is proud to introduce the Media Honor Roll. The Media Honor Roll is a way to recognize fair and balanced reporting about our schools. Media can be recognized in three categories: print, radio and television.
Reporters have the power to shape community attitudes about public schools, and the Media Honor Roll is a way to recognize fair and balanced reporting about our schools. As student advocates, we shouldn’t be opposed to reporters who cover our schools’ shortcomings fairly. We should also work closely with local media to avoid unfair “school bashing.”
The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives in three categories: print, radio and television. Criteria for honorees include:
- make the effort to get to know the superintendent, board president and district’s mission and goals;
- report school news in a manner that is fair, accurate and balanced;
- give a high-profile position to good news about schools;
- visit the schools; and
- maintain a policy of no surprises by sharing information with school representatives.
Nominations for the 2012 Media Honor Roll are due June 1. For questions, contact Jennifer Rogers, jrogers@masb.org, 517.327.5908.
