Do you have a program in your school district that has positively impacted student achievement? Do your administrators engage students in creative ways of problem solving? Do you have any student-created initiatives that are making a positive difference in your schools or community? Does your staff demonstrate innovative thinking and passion in engaging students?

If so, we would like to encourage you to share your district’s best practices with other educators throughout Michigan, and receive the recognition and reward deserved for driving excellence in education in your schools.

We’ve recently mailed posters (pictured above) to all building principals in the state. Now we’re asking you to encourage your administrators to help us get the word out, and get as many great programs as possible in the running for EdEx honors!

Submissions are now being accepted for the 2013 Education Excellence Awards to be held on May 15. Three finalists are selected in each of eight categories, with a separate category for ISD’s. The winner in each category is announced in the fall and recognized during the EdEx: Michigan’s Best awards at the MASB Annual Conference on Oct. 27. Throughout the years of honoring hundreds of local school districts for exemplary programs that impact the future of students, we’ve seen promising practices come to life in science, math, the arts, community service, health and school safety, technology, after-school programs and many others. Those schools that are recognized receive a financial reward, as well as a trophy and road sign to show off in their community.

We encourage you to promote this great opportunity for recognition within your school district. To submit entries or for more information, please direct your administrators to the application pages at MASB's website. Or, feel free to call Pam Jodway, director of communications, PR & marketing at 517-327-5908.

Submissions are due March 8.

History of the EdEx and Michigan's Best Awards

View 2012's winning programs here.

In 1994, MASB decided that Michigan's school districts needed help creating public awareness of the great things happening in classrooms across the state. Central to this goal was the desire to provide a vehicle for telling the good news and for strengthening confidence in public education.

In 2000, MASB invited SET SEG School Insurance Specialists to partner in celebrating school excellence. With SET SEG's exclusive sponsorship and generous financial support, MASB has signficantly enhanced the annual Education Excellence Awards Program.

The Education Excellence Award program recognizes original, innovative programs in various categories that positively affect student achievement in local and intermediate school districts.

From the hundreds of programs entered in several program categories, judges select the top three programs in each category for the Education Excellence Award. Winners receive trophies, media recognition and street signs to post outside their school proclaiming them a Winner—Education Excellence Award. Those winners move on to the final phase of judging and the top program is awarded the prestigious Michigan's Best Award. This three-part recognition includes a presence at MASB's Annual Fall Conference; a check for $1,500 to enhance and maintain the program; and an elegant trophy symbolizing high honor.

In the first phase of judging, the top three programs in each category will be selected for Education Excellence awards. Honorees will receive trophies, media recognition, a cash award to be reinvested into their program, and metal street signs to post outside their school proclaiming them an Education Excellence Award winner.

In phase two, Education Excellence winners will be judged for "best in category." The programs selected will receive MASB's highest honor, the Michigan's Best Award, presented at MASB's Annual Conference. Michigan's Best winners receive an additional cash award thanks to the generosity of SET SEG School Insurance Specialists, which continues to pledge sponsorship funds to support this important program.

In the searchable directory below are brief descriptions and contact persons for all of the winners of MASB's Education Excellence Award program since 1994. You can search by region, program category or level for exemplary programs serving kids throughout Michigan - a great tool for curriculum directors, principals, and school improvement committees. We hope you will join us in saluting these outstanding educators.
